Wherever in South America you are headed

The Andes and the Amazon are different trips

Peru and the AndesCusco, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley are the classic route. The vaccine conversation usually covers typhoid and hepatitis A, and a side trip into the Amazon, like Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado, often brings yellow fever into the picture.
BrazilCoastal cities and the Amazon are different trips, but yellow fever protection is part of the conversation for much of Brazil, including some major coastal cities. Typhoid and hepatitis A come up for most routes, with malaria prevention for Amazon region travel.
Colombia and EcuadorCartagena, Medellin, the coffee region, Quito, and the Galapagos each raise their own questions. Your pharmacist walks through typhoid, hepatitis A, and whether yellow fever applies to the lowland parts of your route.
Argentina and ChileBuenos Aires, Santiago, Mendoza, and Patagonia trips usually center on hepatitis A and routine boosters. Add Iguazu Falls or other lowland side trips and yellow fever often joins the conversation, so bring your full route to the visit.
Bolivia, Uruguay, and beyondLa Paz sits high, the lowlands sit low, and the difference matters. Montevideo trips tend to be light on vaccines, while routes that mix altitude with jungle regions get a route by route look at what protection fits your plans.
Somewhere else in South America? These are common routes, not the full list. Every visit starts from your actual itinerary, wherever in South America it goes.

What we go through for most South America trips

Authorized center

Yellow fever

Riley's is an authorized yellow fever vaccination center, so we issue and stamp your ICVP yellow card in person. For South America, yellow fever comes up for many routes, from the Amazon to some major coastal cities, so bring your full itinerary.

When to get it
At least 10 days before you arrive. The certificate is not considered valid until 10 days after the dose, so late bookings are the most common reason travelers get stuck.
You leave with
Your ICVP yellow card, signed and stamped. Keep it with your passport. For most travelers a single dose is treated as lasting for life.

Typhoid

One of the most common recommendations for South America trips, especially with local food, markets, or small town travel.

Who it is for
Travelers eating outside hotels and restaurants, visiting friends and relatives, or heading to smaller towns and rural areas, where food and water exposure is higher.
When to get it
Around 2 weeks before departure so protection has time to build.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A is a common recommendation for South America trips. Hepatitis B often comes up for longer stays, medical work, or close contact with local communities.

When to get it
Start as early as you can. Both are given as a series, and the later doses are what give you longer lasting coverage.
At the visit
Both are reviewed against your itinerary and your past vaccination history.

Rabies

Comes up for jungle treks, remote travel, long stays, and trips with likely animal contact.

At the visit
Your pharmacist weighs your route and activities and tells you whether the series makes sense for your timeline.

Malaria prevention

Malaria is not a vaccine conversation. It is a destination risk your pharmacist walks you through at the visit.

At the visit
Prevention planning and bite precautions for Amazon basin and lowland routes. Malaria vaccines are not part of routine care before travel for US travelers.

Timing matters more than most travelers expect

Give your trip the head start it needs

Several travel vaccines need a head start before you fly, and your yellow fever certificate is not considered valid until 10 days after the dose. Some vaccines are given as a series over a few weeks, so booking early gives you the most options. Flying sooner than that? A visit is still worth it. Even on a short timeline there is almost always something useful we can do, and you leave with clear guidance for the road.

  1. Tell us about your trip. A short form, about a minute from your phone.
  2. Pick a preferred time. We hold it for you and a pharmacist calls to confirm. Appointments usually available the same week.
  3. Come in once. Your vaccines and travel advice in one visit. Walk out ready to go.

Questions travelers ask

South America trip FAQ

Is yellow fever required for my South America trip?

It depends on your exact route. Yellow fever enters the conversation for more of South America than most travelers expect, including parts of Brazil beyond the Amazon, and some countries ask for proof when you arrive from a country where yellow fever is present. Your pharmacist confirms what your itinerary calls for at the visit.

Do I get my yellow fever certificate the same day?

Yes. Riley's is an authorized yellow fever vaccination center, so we issue and stamp your ICVP yellow card in person at the visit. Keep it with your passport.

How early should I book before flying?

A few weeks out gives you the most room, since some vaccines are given as a series and your yellow fever certificate needs 10 days to become valid. Appointments are usually available the same week if that is not possible.

I fly in two weeks. Is it too late to come in?

No, come in as soon as you can. There is almost always something useful we can do, even on a short timeline, and your pharmacist will walk through what your trip calls for.

Can you see kids before a South America trip?

We are currently accepting children 12 years and older. Your pharmacist reviews age and health history to confirm what fits your child's trip.

What about malaria in the Amazon?

Malaria prevention is part of the visit for Amazon basin and lowland routes, with planning and bite precautions suited to where you are headed. Malaria vaccines are not part of routine care before travel for US travelers.

What does the visit cost, and is it covered by insurance?

The standard consult is $49, or $59 for an express visit seen within 2 business days. A companion traveling to the same destination is $25. Vaccine coverage varies by plan and patient, so ask us for details. The consult is a separate charge. The fee is refundable with at least 24 hours notice; appointments booked within 24 hours of the visit time are not refundable.
